Slavery And The Slave Trade - 2968 Words
The history of slavery is long, documented, captured in photos and personal narratives of slaves and slave owners. There are many accounts of how slavery started, the horrific stories of transporting slaves and what they were used for throughout history. To start at the beginning you have to start with how slaves were placed in different countries and continents where they were not born. Most know about the Atlantic slave trade that effected North America, South America and the Caribbean. Slavery existed way before the foundations of America were set in stone. There was slavery in the bible days between the Hebrews and Israelites. Some do not know besides the Atlantic slave trade there was also the Eastern Slave trade. Essay on Neglect of the Elderly - 1202 Words
The Neglect of the Elderly With the growing number of senior citizens in our expanding society, abuse and neglect of the elderly is a widespread issue in our society. Neglect can come in many ugly forms and can be quite horrifying when actually investigated. When we as a society fail to meet the needs of our senior community we are only creating a perhaps dreadful prelude to our own inevitable destiny. Elder neglect is the failure to fulfill obligations to a senior citizen. According to one report, it accounts for 49% of elder abuse cases (Protecting the Older Adult, Nursing, July 2000). Neglect comes in many forms. A caregiver is required to supply sufficient amounts of nourishment, a comfortable shelter, safety,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦(Litigating the Pressure Sore Case, Lesley Clement, Forum Vol. 30 (6), August 2000). A resident that is bedridden or confined to a wheelchair must be repositioned at least every two hours in order to relieve pressure on specific areas. Bedsores that are neglec ted or untreated can cause tissue to deteriorate becoming painfully infected. Prevention requires adequate staffing putting in time and actual effort. The fact whether the neglect was intentional or not is not the important issue, it is whether the safety of the resident has been compromised as in allowing a resident with Alzheimers to roam unsupervised outside the facility. Staff may be more susceptible to elder abuse if they are stressed by too many responsibilities, are deficient in training, work under deprived conditions or just not suited to care giving in nursing homes. Many elders who are cared for in the homes of their family members, who are responsible for their direct care, are also being abused through neglect. This type of neglect is harder to detect. Friends and members of the family might just chalk up signs of abuse to the fact that the elder might be showing signs of dementia or just basic old age syndrome. Elders may not be able to stand up for themselves in abusi ve conditions especially if they are frail and not thinking, seeing or hearing as well as they used to. Bracing myself, I entered his room, but rather than encountering the gloomy scene I expected, it exuded a profound serenity. ââ¬Å"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language,â⬠slipped from my grandfatherââ¬â¢s aged lips; a gentle, contented smile shone from his face. He died the next day. How was he so calm as death approached? Did he not fear or even grasp the extent of the unknown path before him? What did the quote he knew so well mean to him? The beauty I beheld in that sterile hospital room did not reveal its importance until years later, but that scene of a peaceful death held a precious secret that has come to affect my very being. When I asked my mother what he was thinking on his deathbed, she answered with fond reverence, ââ¬Å"He was reciting the poems of John Donne in his mind, going over the lines heââ¬â¢d studied a thousand times and could never forget. He always loved his books and his poetry, they held a special place in his heart. He devoted his life to them. Does that help?â⬠I left the room before she had finished this last sentence. Books, literature, poetry these had granted my grandfather a consummate life. I rushed to my sisterââ¬â¢s room and sat before her towering bookshelf. I recited the titles: Catcher in the Rye; The Bell Jar; The Brothers Karamazov; Siddhartha; Candide; The Great Gatsby; The Heart is a Lonely Hunter; Heart of Darkness; Madame Bovery; The Stranger; Gulliverââ¬â¢s Travels They all sounded so beautiful, so full of potential, so enticing, so fascinating; they held something I knew I desperately wanted. On that day, I plunged headfirst into the world of books. A fresh crease in the spine of a classic was the beginning of a great day. I devoured pages, consumed ideas, and most important, found profound contentment in them. The cryptic lines were like a mysterious treasure to me. I loved everything about them and never stopped reading. A good book could lift me from the deepest depths. When I visualize my future, I can think of nothing more fulfilling than following my grandfatherââ¬â¢s footsteps and devoting my life to the study of humankindââ¬â¢s greatest treasure: books. Their magic fills up the blank spots in me and the more I read, the more I get out of them and the more my love for them grows. Furthermore, I dream of one day pouring my own soul onto pages, perhaps becoming the inspirer rather than the inspired. Ultimately, I desire to affect the same passion on others that my grandfatherââ¬â¢s work has bestowed upon me. Months after my epiphany, my mother approached me and said, ââ¬Å"I remember something your grandfather said at the very end, perhaps it will help answer your question. He said, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m not afraid, I have my Shakespeare and I have my Donne.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ Iââ¬â¢ll always remember that. That line has since become the epitome of my lifeââ¬â¢s ultimate goal. As time goes on, and pages continue to turn, I can take solace in the fact that literatureââ¬â¢s wisdom will undoubtedly satiate my lifeââ¬â¢s thirst and allow me to leave this earth with as much tranquility and sense of achievement as my very inspirational grandfather.
