I Have My Donne free essay sample
My mind was racing, my childlike ingenuity forcing my imagination to exaggerate wildly. I walked down the corridor of the hospital and was hit with apprehension; never had I experienced the grim task of visiting a dying loved one. Bracing myself, I entered his room, but rather than encountering the gloomy scene I expected, it exuded a profound serenity. ââ¬Å"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language,â⬠slipped from my grandfatherââ¬â¢s aged lips; a gentle, contented smile shone from his face. He died the next day. How was he so calm as death approached? Did he not fear or even grasp the extent of the unknown path before him? What did the quote he knew so well mean to him? The beauty I beheld in that sterile hospital room did not reveal its importance until years later, but that scene of a peaceful death held a precious secret that has come to affect my very being. We will write a custom essay sample on I Have My Donne or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When I turned 16, this memory struck me and forced me to wonder what was the key to my grandfatherââ¬â¢s peace. When I asked my mother what he was thinking on his deathbed, she answered with fond reverence, ââ¬Å"He was reciting the poems of John Donne in his mind, going over the lines heââ¬â¢d studied a thousand times and could never forget. He always loved his books and his poetry, they held a special place in his heart. He devoted his life to them. Does that help?â⬠I left the room before she had finished this last sentence. Books, literature, poetry these had granted my grandfather a consummate life. I rushed to my sisterââ¬â¢s room and sat before her towering bookshelf. I recited the titles: Catcher in the Rye; The Bell Jar; The Brothers Karamazov; Siddhartha; Candide; The Great Gatsby; The Heart is a Lonely Hunter; Heart of Darkness; Madame Bovery; The Stranger; Gulliverââ¬â¢s Travels They all sounded so beautiful, so full of potential, so enticing, so fascinating; they held something I knew I desperately wanted. On that day, I plunged headfirst into the world of books. A fresh crease in the spine of a classic was the beginning of a great day. I devoured pages, consumed ideas, and most important, found profound contentment in them. The cryptic lines were like a mysterious treasure to me. I loved everything about them and never stopped reading. A good book could lift me from the deepest depths. When I visualize my future, I can think of nothing more fulfilling than following my grandfatherââ¬â¢s footsteps and devoting my life to the study of humankindââ¬â¢s greatest treasure: books. Their magic fills up the blank spots in me and the more I read, the more I get out of them and the more my love for them grows. Furthermore, I dream of one day pouring my own soul onto pages, perhaps becoming the inspirer rather than the inspired. Ultimately, I desire to affect the same passion on others that my grandfatherââ¬â¢s work has bestowed upon me. Months after my epiphany, my mother approached me and said, ââ¬Å"I remember something your grandfather said at the very end, perhaps it will help answer your question. He said, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m not afraid, I have my Shakespeare and I have my Donne.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ Iââ¬â¢ll always remember that. That line has since become the epitome of my lifeââ¬â¢s ultimate goal. As time goes on, and pages continue to turn, I can take solace in the fact that literatureââ¬â¢s wisdom will undoubtedly satiate my lifeââ¬â¢s thirst and allow me to leave this earth with as much tranquility and sense of achievement as my very inspirational grandfather.

Isolation In The Dance And The Railroad And The Strong Breed Essays
Isolation In The Dance And The Railroad And The Strong Breed An overall theme of isolation permeates through both Wole Soyinkas The Strong Breed and David Henry Hwangs The Dance and the Railroad. Every character in these two plays suffers from some form of isolation from the rest of their society. Although Hwangs Lone and Soyinkas Girl are isolated for markedly different reasons and take opposite roads in their character growth, they share many similarities including often mirroring their society and some of their treatment of other characters. In The Dance and the Railroad, Lone has self imposed his isolation from the rest of the railroad workers. He describes them to Ma as dead men, believing that they have lost their spirit working for the white devils. Lone does not seem to respect his countrymen and withdraws instead to practice his craft. These feelings change by the end of the play. After the workers are successful with their strike demands, Lone regains his respect for them. He expresses this to Ma: Maybe I was wrong about them(1456). Soyinkas Girl suffers a different isolation. Her isolation stems from the illness that she suffers. She explains to Eman, Dont you know I play alone? The other children dont come near me. Their mothers would beat them(1274). Her isolation symbolically ends near the end of the play, much like Lone. Unlike Lone, however, she accomplishes this through the betrayal of Eman to the village elders. In this she seems to still be a hard character where Lone becomes more compassionate. Although isolated, both of these characters share characteristics with their estranged communities. The Girl, like her fellow villagers, is detached and unaffected by human need. She shares the villages feelings towards strangers and rebukes all of Emans friendly advances. The stage directions describe The Girl as unsmiling. She possesses in fact a kind inscrutability [that] is unsettling(1274). Her treatment of Ifada is merciless. His need makes no impression on her. She says to him, You have a head like a spiders egg, and your mouth dribbles like a roof(1275). When she plays with him, it is entirely for her benefit. She points out in relation to the effigy, just because you are helping me, dont think it is going to cure you(1275). Lone shares characteristics with to railroad workers too. Lones treatment of Ma parallels the treatment he has received from the villagers. He calls Ma a child and an insect interrupting my practice(1446). Ma receives similar treatment from the workers, who belittle him by lying about such things as living underground during the winter and warm snow. While this is similar to how The Girl treats Ifada, the similarities end as Lone grows as a character. Near the end of Hwangs play, Lone not only accepts Ma but also befriends him. He asks Ma: LONE. Will I see you here tonight? MA. Tonight? LONE. I just thought Id ask. (1456) Lone and The Girl share many common characteristics and have many differences. They are both isolated from the others in the play, Lone by choice and The Girl through circumstance. They start the plays with similarities to their respective communities. Both seem to lesson their isolation late in the play, Lone through acceptance of his coworkers and The Girl symbolically through the betrayal of Eman. English Essays

Seeds of Change essays
Seeds of Change essays People are afraid of change. If something is new or foreign or simply different, we tend to be fearful of it. We have seen this reaction throughout history, ranging from communism to anti-Semitism; this reaction can also take form in men who fear that treating women as equals will totally change the face of our patriarchal society. These men do not want women to become educated or join the work force, and they will use almost any means necessary to keep women in their place and maintain their own role as boss, as shown in James Overfields Sources of Twentieth Century Global History, through the writings of Egyptian feminist Bahithat al-Badiya, American feminist Anna Howard Shaw, and Chinese feminist Qiu Jin. These sources reveal the perspectives of feminists around the world, showing their response to the oppressed and stifled role of women in society, and their initiatives to bring change and equality to women everywhere. A Lecture in the Club of the Umma Party, written in 1909 by Bahithat al-Badiya, shows her response to the many hardships that Egyptian women experienced in their everyday lives. This piece is a lecture given to the Umma Party, written in very logical and formulated arguments. For example, she states that men are hypocritical, and then goes on to provide evidence through many specific instances. Her speech is also very practical and pragmatic, containing eight concrete methods for bringing change to the inequality of womens daily lives. The speaker wrote this piece to give women hope, and assure them that they are not alone in their struggles against oppression from male society. A reason that al-Badiya highlights for certain men oppressing women and prohibiting them from becoming educated and joining the work force is that these men fear losing their jobs, and therefore their superiority, to the women. Society believes that when [wom...

Causes of the American Civil War
Causes of the American Civil War The United States maintain their position of the world as the strongest, most influential country for many decades. Observing their history closely, we can see that they had gone through many ups and downs, and harsh yet necessary battles within the nation and with other countries. In order to examine the Civil War and reconstruction of the United States, we need to understand the causes of the war, what happened during the war, and the changes that the war had brought. I believe that the Civil War of 1861 played a significant role in building the stronger nation; likewise, I will discuss three major causes of the war ââ¬â which are the slavery, the conflicts between the North and South states, and the Presidential election of 1860 ââ¬â describe how dreadful the war was, and how the slavery, the relationship among the states, and the economic and political situation changed after the war. Moreover, I will present my own views on the Civil war. First, the slavery was one of t he greatest causes of the Civil War. The Slavery in all across North America has had existed for 168 years. Eventually, by 1804, most of the Northern states abolished slavery institution, but the invention of cotton gin in 1793 increased the use of slaves in the South and the slavery became very important for the South. Before the Civil War, the tension between the North and the South was invested in Slavery. The North was insisting that America should become free country and need to industrialize the South. On the other hand, the South was opposing the North by being pro-slavery for their agricultural industry. The U.S. Constitution was clearly permitting slavery even though the document did not include the words slaves and slavery. For example, in U.S. Constitution Section 2 of Article IV said ââ¬Å"held to Service or Labor in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into anotherâ⬠(Constitution On Slavery). It shows the fugitive slaves must be returned to their owners. M oreover, the Bill of Rights in 1791 did not mention about slavery, yet on the Fifth Amendment, it says ââ¬Å"Be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of lawâ⬠(Constitution On Slavery). According to the Fifth Amendment, the slaveholders were given an absolute right to take their property with them. Since the slaves were equaled properties, they could take their slaves even to the free Northern states. It developed into negative conflicts between the North and the South. However, America gained huge part of the West from the victory in the War with Mexico, including California, Utah Territory and New Mexico Territory. In Addition, the amount of gold that was discovered in California was huge and it led the Gold Rush in America, which did not last for long. The issue of whether the new states in the West should be opened to slavery or should be free from the slavery brought a big political confusion. The state of California was extremely important for the b oth powers. The North was asserting completely opposite opinions from that of the South. Since California got so much richer quickly, if the slavery in California got abolished, the South states would significantly lose their political and economic power. In contrast, if the slavery got permitted and protected by the federal government, the South states would be able to gain more power. The South was saying that they would leave the Union if California becomes a free state. ââ¬Å"Eventually, the issue drove the South to assert their opinion, which was to elect two different presidents between the North and the Southââ¬

How do you define success Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1
How do you define success - Essay Example Irrespective of the ethical value of goals, achievement is referred to as success, but only in the individualââ¬â¢s own viewpoint. Hence, success can be defined as attainment of objectives. However, this definition pertains only to an individualââ¬â¢s personal viewpoint about the results of his/her efforts. People have their own standards of rendering an individualââ¬â¢s attainment of his/her objectives successful. The world regards ethics and morality. Therefore, people whose achievements induce positive changes in the world in any way are considered successful by people. On the contrary, people deem an individualââ¬â¢s efforts as failure if the individual attains his/her goals but they cause negative changes in the world. ââ¬Å"Hitler succeeded in storming across Europe, Napoleon succeeded too, Al Capone, Sam Giancanna, John Gotti, and others succeeded in becoming crime king pins. Stalin succeeded in murdering millions of his own peopleâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Affirmations for Radical Successâ⬠). Not all of these people are considered successful

Integrated Marketing Communications Plan for Dulux Essay
Integrated Marketing Communications Plan for Dulux - Essay Example are now splashing on colour and comfort since they have ceased the practice of periodically selling their houses where the estate agentââ¬â¢s notion of neutrality ruled the day. Most houses were previously painted white in UK to show neutrality. Just 3% of homeowners like white according to new research from Dulux (Sunday Telegraph 2008). Due to the unfavourable conditions in the property market as a result of the crunch, most homeowners may not afford to move to new places (Sunday Telegraph 2008).. These may need to redecorate their homes as a way of trying to revive interest and give a new feeling to the place. So basically, Dulux is targeting homeowners who have no immediate intention to move out as well as those who need to spruce up the image of their homes to look a bit more attractive. The old consumers who would continue staying where they have been staying constitute the potential market for Dulux. These consumers are likely to redecorate their homes at a lower cost as they wish to spend less in a bid to revive interest in their old places. Even some home owners would want to change colours as a way of moving away from the traditional white colour which previously dominated most homes as outlined above. With Duluxââ¬â¢s paint mixing service at their disposal, these home owners might wish to take advantage of it to improve the appearance of their surroundings rather than stick to the ââ¬Ësellableââ¬â¢ creams at the market. Obviously these people would go for a service that specifically meets their requirements at a lower or no cost than spending large sums of money on the same service. Integrated marketing communication is primarily concerned with the strategic coordination of roles of a variety of communication disciplines such as advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, direct marketing, public relations, sponsorship (Cant 2000). Mass techniques like advertising, sponsorship and publicity for instance, can be effectively used as communication
