UK employment law on unfair dismissal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
UK employment law on unfair dismissal - Essay Example 2006) and it is necessary to refer to the common law test for defining the status of employee. The statutory provision is bolstered by the Ready Mixed Concrete test (Ready Mixed Concrete (South East) Ltd v Minister of Pensions & National Insurance [1968] 2 QB 497), which requires an examination of the ââ¬Å"overall pictureâ⬠(Jupp, 2005) The starting point for determining whether an individual is an employee is the ââ¬Å"controlâ⬠test (Honeyball & Bowers. 2006). This was established in the case if Yewens v Noakes (1880 6 Q.B.D. 530), where Bramwell LJ asserted that ââ¬Å"A servant is a person subject to the command of his master as to the manner in which he shall do his workâ⬠(at p.532-533). However, socio-economic developments in the labour market have changed the shape of employment status, thereby undermining the suitability of the control test as a sole determinant of employment status (Pitt, G. 2007). This was further acknowledged by the Court of Appeal in the case of Walker v Crystal Palace FC ([1910] 1 KB 87), where the control test was given a different slant by focusing on whether the employer had the right to control the background arrangements for the work such as when and where the work was done, payments and holiday entitlements. However, the Walker extension of the control test was further developed into the ââ¬Å"integrationâ⬠test as propounded by Lord Denning in the case of Stevenson Jordan and Harrison v MacDonald & Evans ([1952] 1 TLR 101) ââ¬Å"â⬠¦under a contract of service, a man is employed as part of the business and his work is done as an integral part of the business; whereas under a contract for services, his work, although done for the business, is not integrated into it but is only accessory to itâ⬠(at p.111). Alternatively, factors pertaining to the working arrangement between the Mandox household vis-à -vis Bill and the nannies will also be important in determining employee status such as responsibility for tax, national

A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay
A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay The Labour Party is a political party in Great Britain that is just about 110 years old. The party was formed in 1900 as an outgrowth of the trade union movement and to change Parliaments interests. The reason the Labour Party wanted Parliament changed was because the people who formed the party felt that Parliament was not representing the interests of everybody in Britain. The people who felt neglected by Parliament were hard working people, socialists, and unionists. During the early stages, the Labour party struggled to make an immediate impact in Britains political system and the partys leaders had to do something about their struggle. The Labours leaders worked with Liberal Governments during 1906-1914 to help themselves gain some form of political ground. The Liberal parties eventually split in 1916 and the Labour Party saw this as a perfect opportunity to obtain power. The 1918 election proved a pivotal point for the Labour Party and even though they did not win the general e lection, they came away with one-quarter of the vote. The reason the 1918 election was so successful for the Labours was because of World War I coming to an end and the growth of womens suffrage. On December 6, 1923, the Labour Party won the general election and finally reached the major political office for the first time in its partys history. The party only held office for a few months under Ramsay MacDonald, and failed to get reelected for a second term. A main reason for the party not getting reelected was because of the Zinoviev letter. The letter was published in British press stating that there were connections between Russian Communists and the Labour Party. Due to anti-communism in Great Britain, the Labours lost the 1924 election as well as 40 seats in the House of Commons. The Zinoviev letter later turned out to be forgery, but the damage was already done to the Labour Party. The Labour Party would rebound later in 1929, but the major election they won came in 1945. The crucial election followed after the Second World War. When the war ended in May 1945, Winston Churchill called for a general election a few months later in July. The Labour Party was running under the slogan of Let Us Face the Future, and its message was that Britain cannot return to poverty and unemployment like the 1930s. The Labour Party also promised to remove disease, want, squalor, ignorance, and unemployment. The Labours ended up winning in a landslide and this presented the party with the opportunity of making significant changes for Great Britain. After the crucial election in 1945, the Labour Party once again was elected in 1950 and this marked the first time in the Partys history where they won consecutive elections. Following the 1950 election, the Labour Party would only be in office for around 14 years till 1997. The Conservative Party dominated the general elections, winning three consecutive terms in 1951-1959 and four consecutive terms in 1979-1992. This was a result of internal fighting of the Labour Party and as a consequence, people detached from the party to form the Social Democratic Party in 1981. All of these effects left the Labour Party out of dominance for nearly three decades and would not come back to power until Labour Party candidate Tony Blair was up for election. Blair had become the party leader in 1994 and won the 1997 general election in a landslide. Blairs term was also called the New Labour because it was seen as a separation from the old Labour for having different policies such as one known as the Third Way. The New Labour term was proven to be the right fit for Blair because he won the next two elections and this became the Labour Partys first time winning three cons ecutive elections. Blair did not become very popular with Great Britain and its citizens because of his stance on the Iraq War. Blair ended up resigning on June 27, 2007 and Gordon Brown was handed the Prime Minister position after Blairs resignation. Gordon Brow was the Chancellor of the Exchequer during Blairs term as Prime Minister of Great Britain. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is a Cabinet position responsible for all economic and financial matters. The economy was one of the main concerns for both Blair and Brown, but Blair had to overcome Thatcherism and implement a new strategy for fixing the economy. There were many ideological platforms that Blair ran during the 10 years of being Prime Minister, but one of the main ones was reworking the economy. The way Blair

The Evil Eye in The Tell-Tale Heart Essay -- Tell-Tale Heart Essays
The Evil Eye in The Tell-Tale Heartà à à à à In Edgar Allen Poe's Short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" much is made of the "evil eye" of the old man. Immediately we are introduced to a man who would never hurt a fly. The narrator of the story even goes so far as to say he loved the old man. This old man is portrayed as one who would do anything for you. However, the caretaker of the old man has one small problem with the old man. The eye that darn evil eye! What could cause a person to become enraged by an eye and only one eye? à à à à à à à à à à à Martha Womack stated that the violence comes from an irrational fear represented through the old man's eye. "The belief in the evil eye dates back to ancient times, and even today, is fairly common in India and the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. References are made to it in Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist and Hindu faiths" (Poedecoder). Womack goes on to compare the "evil eye" to a Medusa type object that is being able to harm a person just by looking at them. This comparison goes to support my theory of a God like entity within the eye of the old man. à à à à à à à à à à à Many people have attempted to rationalize the meaning of the single "evil eye." Some people have attempted to relate the old man to a Cyclops. However, I see this eye from a Christian point of view. The eye is not "evil" in the sense of the devil instead in my humble opinion it is the eye of God. I agreed with B. D. Tucker. The first thing I attempted to do, was relate the Cyclops theory however, this did not sit well with me. The reason the Cyclops theory does not fit the story is that in the second paragraph Poe writes, "One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture" (Kennedy 34). The mythical Greek creature had only o... ...deas for what the story could represent. After studying the "Evil eye" in this story, I have no doubt that the eye is that of God. Attitude Toward Elderly
Old Age Attitudes towards Older People Attitudes and treatment towards elderly people can be said to vary drastically across cultures. From Europe, Asia, the Middle East, the America's, Africa and Australia, the attitudes expressed by the community towards older people are very different when compared to one another. 1. In the 1960s, Robert Butler coined the phrase ageism, which he defined as: ââ¬Å"A process of systematic stereotyping of and discrimination against people because they are old, just as racism and sexism accomplish this with skin color and gender.Old people are categorized as senile, rigid in thought and manner, old-fashioned in morality and skills . . . . Ageism allows the younger generations to see older people as different from themselves; thus they subtly cease to identify with their elders as human beings . . . ââ¬Å". People of older age who were once respected and admired are now being dehumanized and being categorized as ââ¬Å"undesirablesâ⬠.People look ed up to them as someone who have been around the block a couple more times and therefore they held a certain level of knowledge in their life banks that society thought of as useful. Society has robbed them of those life banks now and is holding them hostage in ââ¬Å"homesâ⬠. Instead of grandchildren getting to enjoy stories of war, love, life, and experiences from their grandparents around the dinner table they are subject to visiting them in retirement homes. Those same people who took care of the new society and gave up so much to raise them are now being ââ¬Å"punishedâ⬠for aging and al the affects that come along with it. People use to hold doors open, do lawn work, fix things, anything they could to help and show respect for their elders who were incapable of doing such for themselves. Now-a-days those people have turned their cheeks on elders and just throw them in a retirement home to make it easier on themselves. However there is a town in New York that is revi ving the respect owed to all elders. 2. The community was built on the backs of our seniors,â⬠said Melissa Lee of the Coalition for the Improvement of Bedford-Stuyvesant, which is in charge of the program. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s important that now they reap the fruits of their labors and are able to age in place. â⬠Treating older people as if they are completely useless and incompetent is not only demoralizing them but it is also dehumanizing them. Not only are people handing over the well being of their parents/grandparents/ect. over to a caregiver, but they are not putting in effort to see who some of these care givers truly are. They bully them by: withholding medication from or overmedicating the elderly person, keeping the elderly person in unclean living quarters, not maintaining the elderly personââ¬â¢s physical appearance, sexual abuse, preventing the elderly person from having any or meaningful contact with his or her family, neighbors, or the public, psychologica l abuse which includes name-calling or a systematic plan to dehumanize the elderly person and make him or her more dependent upon the caregiver, the caregiver prompting the elderly person to answer questions and putting words in the elderly personââ¬â¢s mouth. . Before the early 1980s, there was little, if any, reference made to elder abuse in literature that did address family violence. However, as the years pass, more and more studies have been made, and research conducted on this subject. In 1990, the information of two incidence studies and their results was released, which revealed shocking statistics: anywhere between 1. 6 million and 2 million Americans considered elderly were abuse victims each year. Some of this abuse occurred in the family home; some in institutions. In 2003, the Elder Justice Act was implemented. The neglect and shame put upon the elderly has reached such a peak that they are now the ââ¬Å"undesirablesâ⬠among society. Set aside and cast away from the new age society, elders have become invisible to todayââ¬â¢s youth. Elders are seen to have no purpose or abilities left, which makes them completely and utterly useless to society. Therefore society continues to go on and change leaving elders where they are and not doing things to improve their lives. Stories making headlines such as 4. ââ¬Å"To Be Elderly And Unwanted In Mohegan Lakeâ⬠show the shameful act of some communities to rid of their elderly. shameful story of how a respected local nonprofit group has tried to winterize four summer cottages to house eight elderly poor people ââ¬â and how neighbors and town officials have fought them so that the case has dragged on three years. â⬠These kinds of stories are too often seen and there is a heightening need for young people to come down a few levels and see their elders and respect who they are. The scarce respect that is left for elders is rapidly being taken over by dehumanizing and demoralizing trait s. Instead of just sitting and talking or oing to play games with all of the people of old age in society, the new age people of society decide to take the elders to ââ¬Å"homesâ⬠that will do it for them. However society is not looking long term, they are only looking at instant gratification moves. In twenty to thirty years when this society becomes the elders karma is going to come back and have some harsh payback to hand them. The only thing to be done to stop this awful cycle would be to start respecting, admiring and helping out the old age of today because nobody stays young forever. Works Citied The New York Times. For since each hand hath put on nature's power, Fairing the foul with art's false borrowed face, Sweet beauty hath no name no holy bower, But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace. Therefore my mistress' eyes are raven black, Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seem, At such who, not born fair no beauty lack, Sland'ring creation with a false esteem. Yet so they mourn, becoming of their woe, That every tongue says beauty should look so.

Another measure was taken by TUI when the TUI China was launched for the Chinese tourers sing Germany and a twelvemonth subsequently the TUI opened its first low cost travel bureau in Hamburg. Everything was done on the topographic point and on the topographic point information was given for vacations. In 2004, TUI entered the Russian circuit operator market. A practical circuit operator was launched by the TUI in the undermentioned twelvemonth. This was new measure because this clip, the TUI start selling online an d through electronic media and call centres. Following twelvemonth, it entered the Indian market and the same twelvemonth it bought the complete portions of the Canadian container transporting line. The twelvemonth 2005 was the most of import twelvemonth for TUI when it becomes the biggest circuit operator in Europe. The different types of bundles were introduced by TUI. The most selling bundle was the standard bundle which includes air transit, hotel adjustment, choice and bead service from the airdrome to the hotel and the optional points such as repasts, insurance and jaunts were included. The continuance of the stay was fixed and the hired planes provided the choice and bead service. The monetary value of this bundle was really much competitory therefore it was the most successful bundle by the TUI and captured the major market portion. The circuit operators converted it into a mass market concern. At that clip the group owned about 3500 travel bureaus in different states. It ha s 75 circuit operators active in 18 European markets and it owned more than 100 aircraft with holding control of assorted air hoses. In the twelvemonth two 1000 and five, the TUI was besides the biggest hotelkeeper with 285 hotels and some 163,000 beds. It becomes figure 13 in the ranking of the biggest hotel ironss around the universe. At the same clip the group owned 37 entrance bureaus holding more than 5000 staff. The circuit ushers were from more than 70 states. ( Krishan K. Kamra, Tourism ) . They manage and organize the travel to and from the airdrome and it were due to the effectual direction that TUI becomes the largest market leader in the touristry industry. At that clip the group was besides holding its four sail line drives. The group was besides active in the transportation concern largely in logistics and containers. The figure of human resources working in the group increased twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours with the enlargement of the concern. These employees were in different sections and they were holding their different functions but holding the same nonsubjective i.e. to develop the concern of the group. The group had a strong clasp on the European touristry market in 2005. The TUI has the largest market portion in the touristry industry in Europe. The success of the TUI is all due to its human resources. The enlargement of the TUI was due to its acquisitions of the markets and the deductions of the TUI were due to the altering concern environment. The TUI s enlargement and going the market leader in the touristry industry shows that there is batch of possible in the touristry industry. Decision The analysis of the TUI s instance shows that the touristry industry is the fastest turning industry in the universe. The TUI has developed itself through its enlargement in the new concern lines and by geting the new concerns. It developed it self by presenting new merchandises and aiming new markets. The trained human resource helped it to turn and it besides helped it to go the market leader. The analysis shows that TUI has its success in going the market leader because it has the largest market portion. In the old old ages the touristry industry has its growing at the one-year gait of 4.1 per centum. The enlargement of the touristry industry shows a new tendency. The touristry industry s part to the gross domestic merchandise can be calculated by the gross generated by the tourers. The touristry industry has batch of atomization and it has a big figure of little concerns. This industry is of critical importance to the planetary economic system. The figure below shows the UK s por tion in universe touristry during the 1980 to 1999. ( Laura Bardgett, The touristry industry ) There are figure of factors involved in finding the touristry. These include the economic conditions. If the people in a state have good economical conditions, they will see new topographic points and if they do nt hold much money to pass they will non travel anyplace. The other of import factor is the cost of life and traveling. Some states have high rates on the VAT on the hotel and there is a lessening in the figure of tourers sing those states. The geographical conditions are besides an of import factor. If a state has good geographical location and it has different historical topographic points to see so the tourers will be willing to see that state. ( Roger Doswell, Tourism, How effectual direction makes the difference ) . The jurisprudence and order and wellness and safety issues are involved in finding the figure of tourers sing the new topographic points. A state holding no jurisprudence and order issue and holding good wellness and safety will be targeted by the tourers. Th e tourers prefer to see those states which are peaceable and the people of those states are good hosts. The civilization is an of import factor which determines the figure of tourers sing the new topographic points. A rich cultural heritage is ever an attractive force for the tourers. The tourers prefer to see those states and those topographic points which have some cultural heritage. The TUI has addressed all these factors and it has developed its merchandises harmonizing to the client s demands and wants. The TUI s client relationship direction helped it to derive more market portion. The TUI has addressed and targeted different countries in different parts of the universe. Therefore, the tourers attract towards those companies who design the vacation s bundle harmonizing to the demands of the clients. The fulfilment of the demands of the client help the clients to prosecute with the company and in this manner the company acquire new concerns and develop its concerns. The TUI s success is besides made possible through its cost effectual plans and its bundles. The TUI has become the market leader and gained the maximal market portion. The environmental factor is besides involved in the touristry industry. The states holding good environment are most visited states by the tourers and the TUI has designed its bundles harmonizing to the different environment and climatic conditions in different parts of the universe. The tourers are sing Africa and Australia in different parts of the twelvemonth and likewise they are sing Europe and Canada in different parts of the twelvemont h. The clip factor is involved in finding which portion should be visited during what clip of the twelvemonth. The TUI has addressed this issue besides. The enlargement in different concern lines besides helped the TUI to prolong and develop as a market leader. It introduces different merchandises in the transportation industry every bit good and likewise carry throughing the demands of the clients it introduces its ain sail line. The TUI has its ain hotel concatenation and it has its ain planes. This makes it differentiable from its rivals and gave an border to go the market leader and derive maximal market portion. The success of TUI in the touristry industry will transport on every bit long as it will prolong it self by carry throughing the demands and wants of the tourers. Change is ever there and the best thing is to pull off that alteration. There is a batch of alteration in the touristry industry in the last decennary and this alteration has its drastic effects on the differe nt companies but the lone companies survive which has done the alteration direction. The TUI has become the largest company in the Europe due to its market enlargement and acquiring the maximal market portion due to its selling direction. The success will transport on if the same rules will be followed in the hereafter and the on-going alteration in the concern environment will be decently managed because alteration is an on-going procedure and the best thing is to pull off that alteration.

Go Ask Alice1 essays
Go Ask Alice1 essays I read the book, Go Ask Alice. The author was anonymous. The main character was a girl, and her name was not mentioned. It was written as a diary. I thought that this book was very interesting because it was true; it is based on an actual diary of a fifteen-year-old drug user. In the beginning, she has a break up with her boyfriend and is anorexic. She eats very little. She overcomes that obstacle though. The girl moves because her father gets a job at a university as a professor. She moves with her father, mother, brother Tim and her sister Alex. She has a hard time fitting in at her new school. She hates it. One day though, she meets a girl named Beth. Beth and she talk about boys and drugs, and how they hope never to do them. Beth goes away to a Jewish camp, and when Beth returns, she has a boyfriend, and is able to spend less time with the main character. While Beth was at summer camp, the main character went to her grandparents. There, unintentionally, she tried drugs. She tried Speed and she liked it a lot. Once she went back home, she became friends with a girl named Chris. They get a job together, and do a lot of drugs together. Her parents are extremely upset with her. From then on, things just became worse and worse. Everything goes down hill. She begins to do worse drugs, and other things the she said at the beginning of the book were wrong. She ends up running away twice and that is only the beginning of it. So many things happened in this girl's life. I thought the book was boring in the beginning, only because there was no real problem. As the book continued though, I just got more and more into it. The best part of the book was probably when she was in a mental institution. Everything was so descriptive, that I could almost see it. One weak part of the book is that no matter where the girl is, or how high she is, she still writes the same. That is not realistic to me. Another thi...

A Day At The Park Essays - Tag, Slide Guitar, Free Essays
A Day At The Park Essays - Tag, Slide Guitar, Free Essays A Day At The Park A couple of months ago I went to the park with my nephew. I remember the day like is was yesterday. The weather was cool and clouds were overhead. I sat by myself and watched him play and watched everything happen around me. I wasnt expecting to find so many interesting things just watching people, but amazed at what I did discover. Children were all over the place and were wearing coats that had their favorite characters on them. A girl had purple mittens with a teletubby on them and a boy had a blue coat with Thomas the Train on it. One small boy with green eyes had a hat with a ball on the top. There were only two mothers at the park and seven children not including a baby by the side of one of the mothers. The baby was asleep and was bundled up in two blankets, one pink and one had bunnies on it. The children were all playing a game of tag and were out of breath from running around. One of the boys involved in the game fell down and began to cry. His mother broke away from conversations to tend to the need of her son. After a few minutes he was fine. While that was going on, the other children discovered that when they went down the slide it shocked them. They screamed with delight every time they went down the red plastic slide. After a while they started another game of tag. The kids ran as fast as they could. They would kick up wet sand all over their backs as they ran. Before I knew it, it was time to leave as my nephew and I walked back to my car the thought of being a kid again would be great. All in all, the park was something that I never thought that I would enjoy so much, but I found it to be very interesting.

Myanmar Government a Help or a Hindrance Research Paper
Myanmar Government a Help or a Hindrance - Research Paper Example It is the hope of this author that such a level of discussion and analysis will be beneficial in engaging a more definitive understanding of the issue of systemic corruption and the means by which it impacts upon a society. Regardless of the metric or scale that is employed, it is clear and apparent that the issue of corruption and the manner through it affects the economy is differentiated and cannot be understood categorically. Complicating this issue further is the fact that corruption exists to a different degree and different level within regions, counts, states, provinces, and governments throughout the world. On the whole, scholars have focused upon research questions that discuss the negative ramifications that corruption has upon overall economic growth. Whereas this particular discussion is certainly useful, it fails to capture the underlying truth that corruption is not a static force with respect to reducing overall economic potential/output. Instead, as has been briefly noted above, the differentials that have been enumerated help to create a situation in which corruption affects different entities and people/groups/governments in unique ways.1 Beyond this understanding, it should also be realized that certain countries with a very high degree of corruption can exhibit a surprising level of overall economic growth; whereas other countries that exhibit nearly the same level of corruption face a situation in which static or negative economic growth takes place. As a function of seeking to expound upon this seemingly incongruous fact, the following analysis will be concentric upon analyzing why this might be the case. It is the hope of this author that such a level of discussion will provide the reader with a more definitive and differentiated understanding of corruption within the modern world and the means through which certain nations are able to continue to grow under

Smoking in public Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Smoking in public - Research Paper Example But the topic here leaves no room for debate for the opposite side. How come there are any ââ¬Ëprosââ¬â¢ of smoking in public? A simple search on Google is enough to make one realize, smoking doesnââ¬â¢t really have a pro. Alright, a smoker might argue; the beautiful roll (cigarette) provides the necessary escape from problems (life). But dear smoker, no one asked you to drag everyone sitting at the bus stop to your beautiful fantasy world. Just let them stay in real life and not in the smoke world. ScienceDaily is a popular source of research based news and in one of their post (2009), research shows that among younger individuals and nonsmokers, risk of heart attacks is considerably reduced when they donââ¬â¢t inhale passive smoke (public smoke from someone else sitting at a public place and having that ââ¬Ëescapeââ¬â¢ and insisting others to go on that roller coaster ride for free which reduces life by 11 minutes in a single ride). ScienceDailyââ¬â¢s source for that news is American College of Cardiology. So ban on public smoking reduces heart attacks is a fact not some bloggerââ¬â¢s hunch. This needs to be taken seriously by ââ¬Ësmokriminalsââ¬â¢ (short for smoker criminal). The purpose for this thesis is not convince people or authorities through scientific data because there is plenty of that available from every credible/academic ââ¬Ë.comââ¬â¢. Public smoking is a crime, and if a logical ground is established for that ââ¬Ëfactââ¬â¢, it would have a better impact on everyone concerned. A logical nugget in favor of the thesis statement; innocent bystanders, the nonsmokers never asked for that ââ¬Ëfree candyââ¬â¢, public-smokers need not to give the free samples. The logic is that every (almost every) smoker agrees that smoking has harmful effect on the body, they know it for a fact. And no matter how hardcore a smoker, he would never smoke near his own infant. ââ¬ËYour freedom ends where your nose endsââ¬â¢, and smoke from a cigarette extends to the nose of
Thematic Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Thematic Analysis - Essay Example It is the objective of this paper to present a thematic analysis concerning the working experiences of two (2) distinct hairstylists in the UK. Each hairstylist represents one kind of salon classified according to size: from a small independent salon versus that from a large chain salon. According to Fereday, a thematic analysis is a ââ¬Å"search for themes that emerge as being important to the description of the phenomenonâ⬠ââ¬â in this case, any underlying difference or similarities in the hairstyling business. This is determined from interviews conducted as part of an ESRC project about learning in the workplace during the years 2004 ââ¬â 2007. As part of the thematic analysis process, coding is required. Fereday, in their article, defined coding as ââ¬Å"a process in thematic analysis which involves recognizing (seeing) an important moment and encoding it (seeing it as something) prior to a process of interpretationâ⬠. Accordingly, he mentioned that the primary objective of coding (or tagging) is for ââ¬Å"data retrieval. It is used to classify text according to theme, so that later on, when doing analysis, it is easy to retrieve all passages that relate to a given topic. Finally, to enable one to reach conclusive arguments from the codes and themes presented, analytical memos are necessary. According to Usability Glossary, analytical memos are ââ¬Å"brief notes used during the coding and construction of data that summarizes a possible interpretation or analysis of the data. Accordingly, memos assist in remembering particular analysis and enable one to focus future data collection and coding to explore ideas in the memos.â⬠It is imperative to note that the primary objective of going through with the interview or data collection was to represent the subjective viewpoints of hairstylists who shared their work experiences in their

Historically, the hotel industry is an interesting study of the market and the ups and downs of the economy. The franchisor, in turn, provides for a centralized development of the product that is consistent with the franchise name in all of its important aspects. Consequently, others followed suit and the Mariott, Radisson, Hyatt, Ramada, Hilton and Howard Johnson came into existence. Perceptively, brand awareness for the se chain hotels yields a customer base that patronizes the brand as a whole but with concurrent disadvantaged for the franchisees and the franchisor (Langois 7-9). On the other hand, independent hotels such as boutique hotels thrive by providing a unique brand that caters to a particular niche in the market by taking advantage of a good location, a personalized level of service and a different offering specifically for its target market. Technology has afforded boutique hotels to develop their individual brands to compete with the encompassing scope that chain hotels have through internet marketing tools and with the help of organizations like Leading Hotels of the World and Preferred Hotels that promote them (ibid 13-14). Subsequent to branding, the experience of staying in a hotel is a main goal for engaging the market. Ensuring that the clientele are satisfied with their accommodations and that the companies offer the amenities that are necessary for a comfortable stay is the mai n thrust of the industry. The emergence of boutique hotels as a suitable alternative to well-known chain hotels had become more prevalent in the recent years. These boutique hotels are independent and usually owned by a single or individual group of people venturing in the business. They are smaller in scale with around 100 rooms but where they lack in size they make up for in service as they are able to customize a personal kind of service because of the ideal number of guests (Balekjian and Sarheim 2). The difference between the definition of a boutique and chain hotel is difficult to categorically sum-up. Boutique hotels are associated as being design-oriented and offering a unique experience than the typical notion of a hotel while international chains have been known to be ââ¬Å"standardized business hotels and scrutinized for providing consistency at the risk of being impersonal at each location and propertyâ⬠(ibid 3). A particular market group may be more at ease with chain hotels with homogeneous services while some may be more obliging to stay at a place that is distinctively with its own flare. Many new innovations are emerging in the hotel industry to answer the varied growing needs of the clientele. The boutique hotel sector is proving itself as a formidable substitute to the conventional hotel chains that are common sights in many destinations. Analysis of The Various Legal Provisions Research Paper
Analysis of The Various Legal Provisions - Research Paper Example However, dealing with employment laws is a day to day affair for any business or industrial undertaking irrespective of the size and magnitude of the operations. Hence it becomes very essential that the employers understand and appreciate their legal obligations under the employment laws especially when the employers are keen of making changes in the working place or in the terms of employment of the workers in order to be competitive and efficient.Ã Ã As a matter of fact, "United Kingdom [UK] employment law has mushroomed in recent years. Modern UK employment law first saw huge changes during the 1970s. Since then there have been even further extensions to UK employment law, particularly brought about by UK's membership of the European Union which required changes to the UK Employment Law. Year after year UK employment law continues to extend in all areas of working life."Ã In the UK the main employment legislation is the Employment Rights Act 1996. Labor legislation like the Redundancy Payments Act 1965 in the UK and the Acquired Rights Directive 1977(ARD) concerning the employment regulations of EU are examples of the development of the legal face of the employment legislation. The Future of Nursing Essay Example for Free
The Future of Nursing Essay With the current trends and changes that are eminent in the healthcare delivery system in the United States of America and due to the additional needs required for the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) many alterations in nursing will be required in order to meet the needs of the patients. According to the Institute of Medicineââ¬â¢s (IOM) report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, changes in the education, practice, and leadership of nurses will be required to make available accessible, high quality, high value care for patients in the health care system (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2011, p. 85). Although these changes will affect all registered nurses the greatest volume of these modifications will be in the policies, restrictions, and regulations regarding scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN). With the diploma, ADN, and BSN avenues to becoming a registered nurse there are many different options for those desiring to enter the nursing field. However, there are many barriers as well including cost, availability and location of nursing schools (IOM, 2011, p. 166). With the recommendations for nursing detailed in the IOM report many changes will need to be implemented in the education of nurses and also to ease the transition of the graduate nurse into practice (IOM, 2011). In order for nurses to fulfill the full scope of their capabilities in will be essential for them to achieve higher levels of education both before and after licensure. The need for baccalaureate educated nurses will rise significantly as a result of the increasing demand placed on nurses due to the implementation of the ACA. With an increased number of patients entering a health care system that is already exhibiting a shortage of nurses and physicians in many areas of the country it will be necessary for nurses to expand their practice and encompass more tasks and skills to provide the needed high quality care each patient deserves. These changes will require additional education and an evolution to lifelong learning on the part of both the up and coming nurses as well as those already in practice. The educational system for nursing needs to make modifications to provide for an easier and seamless transition to allow for academic advancement. According to the IOM nursing care is linked to higher quality care and increased patient safety. The reliance on nurses to assist in the transformation of the health care system is of the utmost importanceà however there are many barriers that impact this ability. The fragmented health care system also makes the nursing practice difficult with regards to completing tasks such as discharge planning and implementation of home health. Regulatory policies are so diverse across the country that it will be critical to revise and standardize nursing scope of practice across the states. It is particularly imperative for APRNs to be allowed to practice independently to the full scope of their education and a capability to provide care for those living in states with vast rural areas that are severely underserved in primary care (IOM, 2011, p. 107 ). The advancement of APRNs scope of practice has also been met with much resistance from physicians and the American Medical Association (AMA). In addition there is also opposition in relation to prescriptive privileges for APRNs; however the contention that APRNs are less able than physicians to deliver care that is safe, effective, and efficient is not supported by research (IOM, 2011, p. 111). It is also very difficult to determine the actual value that nurses can bring to the health care system as, ââ¬Å"The accounting systems of most hospitals and health care organizations are not designed to capture or differentiate the economic value provided by nurses.â⬠(IOM, 2011, p. 115). With the execution of the ACA it will be vital for nurses to be knowledgeable about cultural and ethnic diversity to implement the patient centered medical home model of healthcare. I believe the patient centered medical home model will be the most plausible tool to accomplish the evolution of the hea lth care system. It has been put into practice within the Military and Veteranââ¬â¢s Administration hospitals and clinics and has been very successful thus far. To make the essential changes in the United States healthcare system however a change in the leadership roles nurses play will be of utmost importance to bring about the necessary restructuring required. Leadership roles which in the past have been those in upper level position handing down commands will need to be reformed into a form of ââ¬Å"leadership which flows in all directions and levelsâ⬠(IOM, 2011, p. 223). The competencies and expertise of those nurses in practice will be imperative in leading the regulatory policies to contribute to the care and safety of the patients (IOM, 2011). Although nurses have never been viewed in a leadership role, and are more commonly viewed as the doers rather than the leaders a change in these views will be required not only in aà collaborative situation with other members of the health ca re team but on all levels. It is therefore crucial that current nurses and those of the future are equipped with the competencies not only to give high value, high quality and safe care to the patient population but also an intimate knowledge of health care delivery, ethics, and innovative ideas with the ability to provide effective patient advocacy (IOM, 2011, p. 224). Mentorship, leadership programs, and fellowship programs are the key in preparing nurses to answer the call to collaborate and lead not only the committees, and established boards but also our country in the innovation and reformation of the healthcare system (IOM, 2011). In conclusion the role of nurses will be forced to undergo radical changes in the areas of education, practice and leadership in the transformation of our health care system. Higher education will be required to produce individuals that are better prepared to practice at the full scope of their ability and will continue to promote lifelong learning. The action of nurses in the field both in the patient centered home model as well as assuming a role of leadership in the patient care environment and in the board room will be fundamental in the future of nursing in the United States. Strategic Report on Delta Airlines Introduction The airline of our group research is Delta Airlines which is one of the most famous international airlines in the world. And this article is going to discuss the comparison and contrast with another famous airline, Singapore Airlines. Besides, it will also evaluate how they will get today business scale through analysis their growth strategy. Comparison and Contrast According to the web page of Delta Newsroom, Delta Airlines was a dusting services organization, which named Huff Daland Dusters, in U.S. in 1924. One of the Delta partners, C. E. Woolman bought it in 1928 and changed it to provide the air mail services and its name Delta Air Services. Moreover, after Woolman took over the company, it started to services the passenger in 1929 which just serviced 5 passengers with only one route from Dellas, Texas to Jackson, Mississippi (Delta Newsroom). In 1945, Delta was officially changed its name to be Delta Airlines (Delta Newsroom). Its services hub had become from 1 to around 11 and flying over 119 countries with 606 destinations in nowadays. Moreover, its annual passenger is around165 million with around 5400 daily flights (Delta Newsroom). Besides, its net profit is around US$10.54 billion in 2013 (Karp 2014). Delta Airlines has become to be today business scale which was mainly depend on its growth strategy of mergers and acquisition in pas s few decades (Ireland, Hoskisson Hitt 2008). Comparing with Singapore Airlines, it also is one of the famous Airlines in the world. According to the web page Singapore Airlines, It was found in 1947 that cooperated with Malaysia Airlines firstly. Its original name was Malaysia-Singapore Airline. However, in 1972 Singapore Airlines suspended to cooperate with Malaysia Airlines and established its hub in Singapore. When it started the business it already has around 18 destinations with 20 airports that including the international flights of Europe, the Middle East and Australia etc and around 6200 staff which already have the related industry experience (Chua n.d.). Until 2014, Singapore Airlines expand to be over 30 destinations with more than 60 airports (Singapore Airlines website). And in 2013-2014 fiscal year, Singapore Airlines got US$ 288 million net profit (Torr, 2014). That is far different from Delta Airlines when Singapore Airlines officially started its business as the business of Singapore Airlines has already tendin g to be mature. However the business scale of Singapore Airlines is less than Delta Airlines nowadays. On the other hand, the first passenger service flight of Delta Airlines is the domestic flight from Texas to Mississippi. And the Singapore Airlines doesnââ¬â¢t have any domestic flight, it just operate international flight. Moreover, Singapore Airlines has Singapore government support. Such as the Singapore government signed a lot of agreement with other countries to support the developing of Singapore Airlines (Chua n.d.). Besides, the Singapore government owned company, Temasak Holding (Pte) Ltd, is one of the shareholders of Singapore Airlines which holds around 56.15% stake of Singapore Airlines (Singapore Airlines website). Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines is mainly utilizing an organic growth strategy to develop its business (Roll 2005). All of these are also different from Delta Airlines. Although Delta Airlines and Singapore Airlines have a lot of difference of starting the business and its growth strategy, they also utilize the alliance strategy, Delta Airline is Sky Team and Singapore Airlines is Star Alliance, to enlarge its business network (Sky Team website and Star Alliance website). Moreover, Singapore Airlines has mergers and acquisition with 49% stake of Virgin Atlantic such as Delta Airlines, however it sold the 49% stake to Delta Airlines in 2012 (Singapore Airlines website).Besides, they also seem to face a similar macro environment. According to our research portfolio in Chapter 2, PESTEL and Porterââ¬â¢s Five Forces analysis that can refer to appendix 2 and 3 for simply analysis, they need to be threat by higher level of bargaining power of suppliers such as fuel and aircraft suppliers and rivalry competitive in the industry with other airlines. Moreover, they also need to face the impact of deregulation that causes the price war with other competito rs. Evaluation of growth strategy According to the above discussion, it related that Delta Airlines is utilizing the strategy of mergers and acquisition to grow its business to become today position. And its first Mergers and Acquisition was starting from 1953, Delta bought Chicago and Southern Air lines and its first international flight in Caribbean and Caracas region had been developed. Then in the later few decades, Delta had another merger and acquisition actions. Through the merger and acquisition strategy, Delta Airlines earned a lot of equity, routes and facilities from those airlines. Therefore, the company scale had been become even bigger and its merger and acquisition time liner such as below table: Table 1 Besides, Delta Airline also use the differentiation strategy to make it different from its competitors to grow its business such as it is first to utilize radio frequency identification (RFID) Tag to check the baggage location through internet. That can help Delta Airlines to save the cost around US$100 million a year to avoid losing the baggage (Rosencrance 2014). Besides, it develops ââ¬Å"Skymileâ⬠to the customers to earn the mile for rewarding the free travel to attract more passengers (Delta Airlines website). Moreover, it also utilizes the technology such as twitter and facebook to interact with the passenger, thus it also got an award of Top Tech-Friendly U.S. Airline in 2012 (Delta Newsroom). Meanwhile Delta Airlines establish Delta TechOps to maintain its own fleet and to provide maintenances services to other company (Delta TechOps website). And it has reduce the threat by supplier and cut its operation cost as well. All of these strategies led Delta Airlines to reach today business scale. And Singapore Airlines, it is mainly based on the organic growth strategy to develop its business. Singapore Airlines develop a lot of different new routes as the Singapore government signed the agreement with the government of New Zealand, Indonesia and Japan etc. before (Chua n.d.).Besides, the Singapore Airlines utilizes the differentiation strategy as well to enlarge its business scale such as it is first to provide free choice of meal and free drink in an economy class in 1970s (Singapore Airlines website). Singapore Airlines seems to be become an industry dominator to provide a lot of services to its passenger for attracting more passengers. It desires to build up a good branding of Singapore Airlines as well. Therefore, it also creates its branding through well training its staff such as providing four month training to its carbine crews that is longer than regular two months training of western airlines (Marquardt 2012). It creates a good image of its carbine crew which name Singapore girls that represent always elegant images as an ambassador of Singapore Airlines to attract the customer (Singapore Airlines website). Therefore, it also got one of the Worldââ¬â¢s Top Airlines award in 2014 (World Airlines Awards website). On the other hand, Singapore Airlines use the modern and new fleet of aircraft (Chua n.d.). The new and modern aircraft of Singapore Airlines build a good perspective to the customer for enhancing its profits sales. Besides, the new aircraft seems to reduce the maintenance time that can also decline the maintenance cost as well. Singapore Airlines is utilizing all of these strategies to develop its business to reach today position. Conclusion In conclude that, a different strategy has a different result and that also affect the development of its business scale such as Delta Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Delta Airlines utilize the mergers and acquisition strategy and Singapore Airlines utilize organic growth strategy. Therefore, their business scale has significantly different from each other. Meanwhile it found that effective growth strategy should also coordinate with other kind of strategies to attract more customers for enhancing the company growth such as Delta Airlines and Singapore Airlines which also coordinate with the differentiation strategy to enlarge its profits sales. One more important thing that, choosing the different growth strategy also depends on its sources such as Singapore Airlines which has Singapore governmentââ¬â¢s financial support, in contrast with Delta Airlines, it has even enough source to be organic growth. Nepal Essay -- Nepal Economy Culture Essays
Nepal Despite nine development plans spanning five decades, Nepal remains one of the worldââ¬â¢s poorest countries. Nepalââ¬â¢s underdevelopment is a result of the historical effects of unequal distribution of assets and social and economic status among different groups, and effects of recent development efforts that have generated further iniquitous income and assets distribution. Understanding Nepalââ¬â¢s underdevelopment has become particularly pressing in light of the Maoist insurgency that began in 1996. In addition to the deaths of more than 6,000 civilians, instability has caused economic stagnation, discouraged foreign investment, and prevented the expansion of the hydropower and tourism industries. Nepalââ¬â¢s future depends on an understanding of how its institutions have created inequity, and how it will respond to the need for institutional reform. Culturally, Nepal is a patriarchal and hierarchical society. Caste is important in the worldââ¬â¢s only Hindu nation. Gender, ethnicity, land ownership, and location are also historically important social determinants. Nepalââ¬â¢s history and geography have contributed to the perpetuation of these cultural values. Historically, Nepal has been very isolated. Situated between China and India, it is bisected by the Himalayas. The country is divided into three bands running from east to west ââ¬â the Himalayas furthest north, the flat and dry Terai in the South, and the middle hills sandwiched in between. Extreme differences in topography, and a lack of roadways and efficient transportation, have meant that communities tended to remain isolated and distinct, closely linked to traditional cultural practices and norms. Industry has been slow to change this, as most Nepalese depend upo... ...astern Nepal, respondents reported that ââ¬Å"society does not recognize the merit of physical work in agriculture; it encourages people to prefer leisure over work, and sees working people as belonging to the lower classes. So far, foreign aided projects have not been able to alter peopleââ¬â¢s attitudes towards physical work by providing alternate examplesâ⬠(Shrestha, 41). Even as development efforts increase, rural people mistrustful of exploitation, and depressed by development failures, are growing harder to reach. Nepalââ¬â¢s political crisis is a response to social inequalities increased and hardened by recent development. Future development will require radical reform: redistribution of resources and increased rural development, weakening of traditional power structures, increased access to and transparency in government, and independence from foreign interests.

Immanuel Kants Theory of Judgment Essay example -- Immanuel Kant, 201
What are, and what are the differences between, judgments of perception and judgments of experience for Kant? Understanding how the mind works has been a major goal throughout philosophy, and an important piece of this deals with how humans come to experience the world. Many philosophers have attempted to investigate this issue, and Hume successfully proposed a framework by which human understanding could be understood. This writing, however, spurred Kantââ¬â¢s philosophical mind, awaking him from his ââ¬Å"dogmatic slumberâ⬠and leading him to develop his own framework to define thought. As Kant strongly disagreed with Humeââ¬â¢s stance that ââ¬Å"it was entirely impossible for reason to think a priori,â⬠he set to correct Humeââ¬â¢s misguided view of custom in regards to objective and subjective reality.à ¹ The outside world, as defined by Kant, is referred to as nature, and ââ¬Å"nature considered materialiter is the totality of all objects of experienceâ⬠(Kant, 36). Human interaction with nature leads to judgments of experience, and these are empirical by def inition (p. 38). Empirical judgments are not limited to judgments of experience, however. Judgments of perception and judgments of experience constitute all empirical judgments, and there are significant differences between the two (p. 38). In order to properly define judgments of perception and judgments of experience, one must first examine the general framework for thought that precedes them. Kant begins by breaking cognition into two distinct parts: analytic and synthetic judgments (p. 9). Analytic judgments are simply statements about the status of some object, and essentially serve as definitions. Analytic judgments are true by virtue, as they ââ¬Å"express nothing in the predicate but what has... ... when looking at pure understanding. Because these concepts exist a priori, it is interesting that they are used in the understanding of experience. Kant is careful in his application of his framework, however, as a goal in his writing was to outline boundaries of metaphysics as a science, and to determine if ââ¬Å"such a thing as metaphysics be at all possibleâ⬠(p. 1). Unfortunately for Kant, it is impossible for all things to be described with objective reality, as seen in his case of the soul (p. 86). While ââ¬Å"determinable bounds [to reason] cannot be thought,â⬠Kant successfully established a framework to examine thought and experience (p. 87). This framework exists in itself as subjective, however, and truly shows how pervasive metaphysics is. Works Cited Kant, Immanuel. Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics. Forgiveness in Personal life
Forgiveness is a superior moral trait and has great reward for the one who forgives. Forgiveness is one of the moral traits recommended in the Quran: Hold to forgiveness, command what is right, and turn away from the ignorant. (Qur'an, 7: 199). In another verse Allah commands: ââ¬Å"They should rather pardon and overlook. Would you not love Allah to forgive you? Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. â⬠(Qur'an, 24:22) Those who do not abide by the moral values God has commanded find it very difficult to forgive others. Because, they are easily angered by any error committed. God knows that forgiveness is not a very easy thing to do and sometimes it is very hard, that is why HE has declared it as a very superior deed. ââ¬Å"The repayment of a bad action is one equivalent to it. But if someone pardons and puts things right, his reward is with Allahâ⬠(Qur'an, 42:40). Even though many people may say they have forgiven someone who has offended them, it nevertheless takes a long time to free themselves of the hatred and anger in their hearts. Their behavior tends to betray that anger and it destroys relationships. I believe if forgiveness isnââ¬â¢t granted from heart in good faith, its not complete forgiveness. Words are worthless if actions donââ¬â¢t follow. Forgiveness in Workplace: At the organization level forgiveness is associated with higher morale and satisfaction, greater social capital, trust, and caring relationships. Forgiveness does not require abandoning anger or resentment, nor does it require pardoning or dismissing the offense. It involves acknowledging and reframing negative feelings and attitudes. Forgiving organizations experience more trusting alliances, productivity, quality, customer care, and a sense of calling among employees. Forgiveness is active not passive. It involves not only the cancellation of negative emotions and attitudes, but also the development of positive emotions and attitudes. Forgiveness is not very common in corporate world. If an employee commits a mistake, itââ¬â¢s not taken as mistake keeping in view of history of employeeââ¬â¢s performance; rather employee is being fired or demoted depending on the severity of mistake. I believe the reason of non-tolerance of the mistakes nd lack of forgiveness culture in organizations is the flow of the talent that is available in the market. Organizations that are short sighted and do not consider their employees as their human capital, doesnââ¬â¢t promote forgiveness in the workplace. Such organizations face huge employee performance issues due to lack of employee morale and employee retention issues as employees always stay insecure about their jobs. When managers and leaders in an organization fail to forgive employees, there is a lack of personal and team productivity that leads to aggressive behavior of employees. An organizational culture that does not promote forgiveness will be engaged in negative and destructive politics which will eventually decrease the organizationââ¬â¢s effectiveness. Each of us can help create a greater sense of forgiveness in the culture of our organizations by (1) honestly evaluating ourselves and (2) seeking forgiveness for our mistakes. Based on my personal experience, there are two examples in one case where forgiveness was granted and the other where it wasnââ¬â¢t. First example involves one of the recruiter in our department, who took an initiative and prepared a report that included an analysis of different resource pools & sites the company was using, the success level of each sourcing pool and how many employees were hired from that source. She sent the report to head of the HR department. HR head received her report well, but her manager was angry about her apparent lack of respect and disregard for the chain of command. Their working relationship became strained in the weeks that followed. The second involved myself, at one of my startup jobs, I was responsible for recruiting and on boarding. My job responsibilities included recruiting, sending offer letter, informing IT about the employee date so that the new hire computer is ready on the start date. One time I forgot to notify the IT department about the start date. The first day of the new hire, who was a director level candidate, office wasnââ¬â¢t ready. He had to wait for an hour before IT had to set up everything on the short notice and urgent basis. Although my manager was very angry, but he supported me and was able to see past my mistake, considered my performance to date, and recognized my potential of the person. Although I was held accountable but my manager did not hold the incident against me. In fact, manager suggested that I devise a solution to the problem so that such an occurrence would not happen again. I documented the whole onboarding procedure with all the steps that ensured the all steps are followed properly in the future.

Company Analysis of General Electric Essay
Running a company often centers on the idea of considering both positive and negative factors in order to then hand down executive decisions accordingly. To best understand the strengths and weakness of any given company, one must understand its base operations and the scope of industry in which the firm exists. In doing so, one would have a bigger picture of how the company operates and how success has been fostered in, as well as highlight in areas in which the organization could stand to see improvement. In this vein, a full analysis of General Electric was conducted, which includes an overview of the company including background and position in the manufacturing industry, as well as insight into the companyââ¬â¢s management structure. Additionally, the companyââ¬â¢s financials will be examined so that a recommendation can be made. Overview of Company According to the company website (2014) General Electricââ¬â¢s slogan is ââ¬Å"Imagination at Workâ⬠and to this extent, the organization has been fostering in imagination for quite some time. According to the research, the company was founded in 1878 by Thomas Edison in Menlo Park. Edison is most notable for inventing the light bulb, and as such, this corporation is one of the largest companies on Earth more than a hundred years later (General Electric, 2014). After getting its start in the 1800s the company, being a leader in the industry of manufacturing and resting solely on the idea of innovation and inventions, began to manufacture different items across a wide variety of industries. According to the GE company website (2014) these inventions were primarily Edisonââ¬â¢s own, and by the early 1900s the company, even against the Great Depression, the organization continued to make appliances for the home, delved into aviation technology, and began to further expand into new markets. As the research notes, because of this the company began to break up into several subdivisions such as GE Consumer Finance or GE energy in order to fully control its wide scope of offerings (General Electric, 2014). By the 2000s, the corporate website notes that the company further expanded into new markets, both online and for various infrastructures and industries around the world. Today, the company hasà also delved into clean energy technology and pulls in an estimated $2 billion for electronics and home appliance sales alone (General Electric, 2014). Management Structure Looking to research conducted by Abetti (2011) one can see that the organization has one of the most complex management structures of all major conglomerates. In addition, as the company website (2014) points out, this structure has been in effect since the 1920s and instead of reevaluating this system; the company has only expanded upon it. According to Abetti (2011) at the top of the management structure, governing all areas is the Chairman and CEO, as well as the board of directors. Next, according to the research are two specific divisions: external and internal company functions. Internally, the company has global research, human resources, and its finance department, while externally; the company has commercial and public relations, business development, and its legal department. As noted by the company website (2014) next the company has its specific divisions or sectors, which this breakup is most notable for. These are as followed: Global Growth and Operations, Energy, Capital, home and Business Solutions, Healthcare, Aviation, and Transportation. It should be noted that each of these organizations exist as their own subdivision and entity, following the GE name. For instance, there is GE Energy, GE Home & Business Solutions, and so forth. This kind of management structure is beneficial to the company in two different ways. To start, it allows the organization to have each subdivision hand down its own division and be more or less contained within its own scope of industry, however, it also ensures that a high level of guidance will still ensure that upper-management is still well aware of what kind of decisions and operations these subdivisions will invest into. In this vein, according to research that has been conducted by Souraj (2010) each of these divisions utilize a lean manufacturing type of approach in order to ensure that all waste is eliminated and the sectors are utilizing the resources to the fullest. This ensures that the company is being cost effective in its approach and it allows the company to be innovative, without creating the potential problem of being extremely wasteful, which would then cut back on the organizationââ¬â¢s profitability (Souraj, 2010). Moreover, each division also utilizes a six sigma approach in order to achieve near perfection. Essentially, this process rests on considering how each sector is doing in its own industry. For instance, despite the fact that GE Energy has seen slowed economic growth, this does not mean that GE Home & Business Solutions has as well. As such, utilizing a six sigma approach will allow the organization to consider the needs and goals of GE Energy before planning for solutions accordingly. Financial Overview According to research that has been drafted by Abetti (2011) by the year 2000 ââ¬Å"General Electric was the worldââ¬â¢s most valuable company with a market capitalization of $520 billion.â⬠However, as the research points out, by 2008, after the U.S. recession led to a national economic downtown this figure had fallen 69% percent to $163 billion (Abetti, 2011). In addition, the global financial system has been equally a cause of concern and if one can consider the U.S. economic downturn the cause of the decrease in market capitalization, the worldââ¬â¢s economy is the factor that has kept the companyââ¬â¢s overall financial state lower than usual (Abetti, 2011). Although, the research points out that the organization has began to see a small increase, and thus, the company has hopes that these numbers will turn around, growth and expansion has not been seen as it had prior to 2008 (Abetti, 2011). This is largely attributed to the belief that the worldââ¬â¢s financial system will see an upwards swing as a natural flow and with the idea that expansion can be considered a way for the company to cut back losses in some areas, while gaining them in others. According to research conducted by Abetti (2011) this line of thinking will not lead to the company to success and instead the company should ââ¬Å"go back to GEââ¬â¢s traditional core competencies and divest non-core businesses.â⬠Moreover, the company should also expand its globalization efforts, rebuild trust between employees and the company, strengthen financial and auditing function authority, and continue to invest in R & D. Although, many of these considerations are subjective, they bear a great deal of consideration when examining the companyââ¬â¢s financials going forward. Conclusion General Electric remains one of the largest companies in the world, despite some of the misgivings mentioned previously. The company has a number of strengths including a diverse portfolio, existing in a wide range of industries, and its ability to be industry-leaders when it comes to innovation and gauging what products will be a success in the future. With this in mind, however, one recommendation that can be made to the company, based on the available research is for the organization to focus on current offerings, rather than continue to seek after non-traditional competencies. Moreover, the company must consider R & D efforts in order to continue to be the forbearers in innovation and creativity. Doing so will open the company to new markets, rather than the company attempting to slip into them and then compete with others in the market as a smaller entrant. If the company commits to these factors than there remains little doubt that General Electric will go back to being one of the worldââ¬â¢s most valuable and innovative companies.
